Takenoko no Sato presents itself as an innocent little snack. Cute bamboo shoot shape, cheerful packaging, friendly chocolate coating over a satisfying crunchy biscuit base. It looks like something you would give to a child. What it actually is, however, is a carefully engineered snacking trap from which there is no dignified escape. The chocolate to biscuit ratio is, and this is not an exaggeration, one of the finest achievements in modern confectionery.
Each piece disappears in one bite, which your brain immediately registers as "that didn't count" and reaches for another. The box, which seemed generous when you opened it, will be empty within a timeframe you are not prepared to admit to. Meiji has been doing this to people since 1979 and nobody has filed a complaint because nobody can stop eating them long enough to write one.

Bite-sized bamboo shoot-shaped biscuits coated in smooth milk chocolate. Adorable enough to feel bad about eating. Not bad enough to actually stop.
