Nestlé Japan operates with a degree of independence from its Swiss parent that results in one of the most creative snack programmes in the world. Their KitKat range in Japan bears only a passing resemblance to the global product — over the years the brand has released more than 400 flavours including matcha, sakura, sake, wasabi, and roasted sweet potato, many tied to specific regions or seasons. Japanese KitKat has become a collector's item, a souvenir, and a genuine culinary curiosity. The standard milk chocolate version is also, for what it's worth, better than the one you're used to.
