Lotte was founded in Japan in 1948 by Shin Kyuk-ho, a Korean entrepreneur who named the company after the heroine of Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther, which is either deeply romantic or an extremely unusual branding decision depending on your perspective. The company grew to become one of the most significant confectionery brands across both Japan and South Korea. Their Ghana chocolate — rich, milky, and named after the West African cocoa-producing region — is a konbini mainstay. Their Crunky chocolate bar adds puffed rice for texture. Both are straightforwardly excellent.
