Koikeya was founded in Tokyo in 1953 and has built its reputation on the bold end of the flavour spectrum. Their Karamucho range, launched in 1984, was the spiciest mass-market crisp Japan had ever seen at the time — a thick, ridged chip coated in hot chili seasoning that builds steadily rather than hitting all at once. It was controversial on release. It became a bestseller. Koikeya has never looked back, and Karamucho remains the benchmark for spicy snacking in Japan — available in both the original chip and a thinner stick format for those who prefer their heat delivered faster.
